Boys Junior Varsity Cross Country, Girls Junior Varsity Cross Country · XC Opens Season on High Note

The boys and girls cross country teams opened the season with a bang last Friday afternoon at the First Capital Cross Country meet in St. Charles.

The girls paced by third and fourth place finishes from Gabby Boeger and Gracie Morris powered past district rival John Burroughs to take first place in the blue division.  Heather Stone and Mary Kate Gelzer picked up medals scoring in seventh and eighth places.   Burroughs runners placed first and second, but Clayton roared back with four of the top ten spots.  Gabby Choo-Kang fought off the charge of Burroughs fifth and sixth runners to seal the victory for the ‘hounds’.

Rounding out the scoring was Maggie Baugh’s notable debut run for the 2015 season.  In the JV two mile race Clayton picked up impressive first, second and fifth place finishes from Samantha Bolourtchi, Liz Szabo, and Ella Engel.

The boy’s team began defense of their district title with a third place finish,

Tom Cormier led all finishers. Cormier pulled away from the field at the one mile mark and was never challenged by another blue division runner.  Michael Painter and John Schultz picked up medals with tenth and twentieth place finishes.

Rounding out the scoring for the ‘hounds’ were David Kim, 32nd place, Krai Gund, 34th place, and Lemuel Lan in 36thplace.  In the JV 5K race, the team was paced by freshman Andrew Wang’s eighth place finish, Thomas Schwiech, Mason Hoffman, and Nick Lee finished 12th, 17th, and 18th respectively.  In the JV two mile the Greyhounds finished first through ninth, led by Alex Szabo closely followed by Andrew Withrow, Mac Redhol, Brian Schmidt, Isaiah Hayward, Rahul Kirkhope, Justin Guilak, Jack Chereskin, and Kentaro Umemori.

The Clayton harrier’s next contest will be Saturday, September 12 at the Forest Park Cross Country Festival.
